23 trick-or-treaters at the door = 23 escape attempts. Book a trusted local walker for the 5–6pm slot so your dog is calm and settled before the chaos starts.
Halloween dog safety guide
The 6 real risks tonight — and exactly what to do about each one.
Chocolate is toxic to dogs — all types, including milk. Xylitol (E967) in sugar-free sweets causes catastrophic blood sugar crash within 30 minutes. Put ALL sweets in a high cabinet tonight.
Every trick-or-treater = one door opening. Anxious or excited dogs bolt. Use a front door chain, baby gate, or keep your dog in a separate room with the door closed all evening.
Many areas have firework displays on Halloween night. Dogs' hearing is 4× more sensitive than ours. Radio or TV on, den setup in the quietest room. Book an early walk — before fireworks start.
Not all dogs tolerate costumes. Watch for: tail tucked, ears back, won't move, keeps shaking it off. Stressed = take it off. A bandana is always the safe S-tier choice.
Glow stick liquid causes excessive drooling and distress (not usually fatal, but unpleasant). Fake cobwebs can be a choking hazard. Keep decorations out of reach.
If you do walk them in the evening, use a LED collar or reflective vest. Visibility matters — for your dog and for drivers. An LED collar is under £5 from any pet shop.

What dog owners say 🐾
Sophie M.
Runcorn
"I used to dread Halloween because my dog would bark at every knock. Having a walker take him out at 5pm completely changed it. He came back tired and we had a calm evening for the first time in years."
James T.
Warrington
"My Frenchie is terrible with sudden noises. The early walk meant she was settled in her crate before any fireworks or knocking started. 100% doing this every year."
Rachel K.
Widnes
"Honestly hadn't thought about booking for Halloween but a friend mentioned it. Game changer. My dog spent the whole evening asleep while we answered the door without panicking."
